Biography

James Hansen Newman, Ph.D. (born October 16, 1956) is an American physicist and a former NASA astronaut who flew on four Space Shuttle missions. Newman graduated from La Jolla High School, San Diego, California, in 1974; he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Physics from Dartmouth College in 1978, a Master of Arts degree and a Doctorate in Physics from Rice University in 1982 and 1984, respectively.

Research Interest

Use of CubeSats for focused research of National interest: MC3 - Mobile CubeSat Command and Control, infrastructure research and development for CubeSat ground stations, optimization of capability to support many satellites with few ground stations CNGB - CubeSat Next Generation Bus, infrastructure research and development with LLNL on optimizing the bus for payload support NPSCuL - NPS CubeSat Launcher, infrastructure research and development for launching CubeSats on Government launch vehicles, optimization of vibration environments for CubeSats HAB - High Altitude Balloons, research and use of high altitude balloons for technology testing, including radio and ground station testing. Also for use in STEM outreach to High School and College students.
